Our VP-44 Black Cats Cap pays homage to Patrol Squadron 44 (VP-44) established on June 3, 1941. Stationed at Midway Island during WWII, VP-44 stood proudly along other PBY Catalina squadrons to patrol the Pacific. While on patrol in 1942, Ensign Jewell H. Reid and his crew were the first to spot the Japanese task force while it was still 700 miles from the American atoll. This advanced warning may have been one of the most important U.S. Navy Patrol Plane contributions of WWII. Deemed by many as the U.S. Navy’s “Eyes in the Sky”, we are proud to offer some history on such a formidable squadron. Order this WWII Naval Aviator Hat for sale.
