Cockpit USA Movie Monday recommendations, this week rather than presenting a Hollywood blockbuster allow us to begin in silence. A true golden oldie, Wings is a silent movie from 1927, directed by wartime aviator, William A. Wellman and the very first of its kind to have won an Academy Award for Best Picture. Starring the captivating Clara Bow, Charles Rogers, Gary Cooper and Richard Arlen, the movie tells the story of two World War 1 fighter pilots who become friends then enemies after they both fall in love with the same woman. Along with the big name actors, host of extras and picture quality, it was the US War department’s complete cooperation that enabled Wellman to produce spectacular aerial ‘dogfight’ scenes for which the movie has become renowned. A remarkable film for the time in which it was produced, Wings remains a silver screen favorite even today and now a Cockpit USA Movie Monday pick!
