Located in Unalaska, AK, the USS Northwestern Memorial is an iconic part of US war history in the non-contiguous state. The passenger and freight ship was launched in 1889 then took an early retirement only to be reinstated by the military in 1940 as a floating bunk house. Meeting its demise in a blaze of fire, the ship underwent a hail of bomb attacks while on the Dutch Harbor. On the 50th anniversary of the event in 1992, divers successfully retrieved the ships propellers which now form part of the memorial dedicated to those who died in the Aleutian campaign which can be found on a serene hillside along the bay.
